Redirecting WordPress.com to WordPress.org

Started by menoob · 10 months ago

First of all, welcome to my new blog! So, this is my first entry as a newbie to blogging outside of the comforts of WordPress.com. Creating a blog that you can have control of, from editing and creating themes to monetizing it, is not as difficult as I initially thought. It is rather a ... Continue reading »

  • Hey, this is pretty cool for a noob ;)

Thank you for the link. I think you're the inspiration for us having to update the PDF (in the next few weeks, need to get used to summer break first :))

    Thanks for your support too
  • Well, if not for your great guide we will all be doing it the manual way. Thanks too!

Noobs can learn pretty fast if we help one another. 8^)
  • Hi!
Thanks for the encouragement. I've also just moved from WP.com to self hosted.

I think i will do this domain redirecting but have a few questions.

    1. Does doing the redirect mean that the wp.com address will still be 'out there' in searches, etc...even if i'm trying to get rid of it and start building stats for new site's domain name?

    2. Would i just do this for one year and hope that at that point the new domain will be all googled up or will doing this redirect thru wp.com mean that the new domain name still won't get out there.

Not sure if these questions make sense...i hope so.
    Thanks!!

  • Hi Lisa,

Yes, your old blog on WP.com will still be searchable in search engines. However, because of the auto redirect, people clicking on the old blog links from search results will see your new blog on your new domain (remember to adjust your Permalinks if necessary). WP.com ranks high in search engines because it is highly optimized and therefore blogs on it benefit too. Expect though that initially, your new blog will lose the traffic you're normally getting from your old blog. Over time, around a month or so, search engines will start pointing to your new blog, provided you continue to create interesting posts and do your own site search engine optimization.

Although I haven't reached a year of redirecting myself, I believe you won't be needing to renew your WP.com redirection after a year. After a little over a month, my own searches on Google shows my new blog in search results while I haven't seen my WP.com blog anymore.
  • Cool--thanks so much for the help and advice. I am so lucky to find sites like yours and blog-well to help with this scary process. :)

  • Thank you for this article; it is all starting to make sense now. A few questions:

    - Do you lose your Google pagerank when you do this?
    - How did you get your subscribers over?
    - What about links from other blogs?

Thanks for any help or advice! I have been wanting to do this for awhile now, and I think I am ready to bite the bullet.
  • Thanks Becky!

Since you are moving to a new domain, you will lose your old Google pagerank. However, you can quickly recover this as your subscribers are automatically redirected to your new site and new visitors come in. Old links will remain pointed to your old blog but anyone clicking on them will be redirected to your new one.
  • Thanks so much for sharing your experience. I'm sure a lot of people will benefit from this. I'm about to move my blog as well. Hope all goes well.
  • Good luck and enjoy!
  • I did this this morning, using the PDF. I couldn't believe how easy and fast it was.

    But wait.

I can't get to the wordpress.org login screen. It's redirecting me to my wordpress.com login. I can't even begin to figure out what went wrong, but if I can't get to the right wp-admin login, suddenly moving to godaddy seems kind of pointless.
  • Hi Maria,

I think you missed one step! You should go back to WordPress.com wp-admin and under the Domains section of the dashboard, select "Put blog here" next to your new domain name. Please go back and review the document and make sure you perform all the steps.

    Hope that helps.
  • Thanks, menoob.
I didn't miss a step, which I verified by redoing the whole thing (including the WP install) three times.

After making myself crazy for a few hours, I finally stepped away from the computer. I went back later, and lo and behold, everything was working perfectly. Absolutely perfectly.

I think it just took a few hours for the DNS servers to update. In the future I will remind myself that these things require some patience. :)

    Thanks!
  • hi there...i just finished following the redirection guide written by those guys in blog-well...my problem is this...when I reset my 1and1 server names the redirection changed.

If you'll try to access empressofdrac.wordpress.com you will be redirected to the domain name ONLY but not to my self hosted site. That is if you'll check empressofdrac.com you will be redirected to my old wordpress blog instead to my new self hosted blog.

Before I reset my Domain Name Severs to it's original settings I changed them to wordpress domain name servers(as what the redirection guide from blogwell said)(ns1.wordpress.com etc.). My site has been redirected well that time...

But it goes the other way when I reset my DNS setting. I just followed blog-well's instruction...I don't have any idea what to do now...
  • Hi there!

Sorry for the late reply. Anyway, I heard the guys at BlogWell has already helped you out? Yes, it takes a while for DNS servers to propagate their data to the rest of the electronic boxes that spun the Net!

    Enjoy your new site!
  • How do you find your wordpress.org blog ranks in comparison to your old wordpress.com blog ?
  • Can't compare them now since it's been a while since I transferred to my wordpress.org blog. Nobody goes to the old wordpress.com site anymore, and if they do, they'll just be redirected to the new site.
